Brunswick Board of Education unanimously approves teacher bonuses

BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Board of Education on Thursday approved awarding employee bonuses.

Brunswick County Schools Spokeswoman Jessica Swencki said board members unanimously approved a $750 bonus for all school employees. Employees will receive the bonus in a separate check Nov. 20.

“It’s just nice to have an extra little something to keep going,” board member Catherine Cooke said.

Cooke said the board considered several options for employee bonuses between $500 and $1,000.

“We had looked at it last year. Then this year there was some money in fund balance. We had some expenses that came up, so it knocked [the bonus] down a bit,” Cooke said.

Last year, board members awarded school employees a $1,000 bonus. In the current fiscal year’s state budget, school employees received a 1.2-percent pay increase, but no local pay increase.

“The economy is still tough, so since we had the funds available, we decided to go ahead and do that. And we wanted to do it before Black Friday,” Cooke said, referring to the busy day-after-Thanksgiving shopping day.

Brunswick County Schools employ about 1,700 people.
