WILMINGTON — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is asking its customers to voluntarily implement restrictive water use measures, to begin Thursday, July 9.
A great deal of the water supply’s service area is in a prolonged severe drought. New Hanover County is mostly in a D2 severe drought, while the southern portion of the county is marked by an extreme drought D3, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Thus, there has been an increased water demand for irrigation. Reducing water consumption will help supplies remain adequate for fire protection and medical services, essential to public safety.
A voluntary irrigation schedule limits CFPUA customers from utilize large-scale water needs:
- No irrigation on Mondays
- Irrigation at odd numbered addresses (e.g., 1001 Main St.) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
- Irrigation at even numbered addresses (e.g., 1002 Main St.)on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays
- Automatic spray irrigation: Between midnight and 6 a.m.
- Hose-end sprinklers: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. to 10 a.m.
