Man arrested for fatal shooting at Southport Yacht Basin

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A 40-year-old man faces multiple charges for opening fire along the Southport Yacht Basin on Saturday evening, leaving three people dead and multiple others injured.

Nigel Max Edge has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of common law-attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. He is currently being held without bond and will have his first court appearance on Monday at 2 p.m.

Edge opened fire at patrons at the American Fish Company around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. According to court documents, he used a short barrel AR rifle, with suppressor, folding stock and scope. Multiple people called 911 reporting 10 to 15 gunshots heard in the Southport Yacht Basin.

According to authorities, Edge was in a boat along the Intracoastal Waterway, paused and began shooting before driving off toward Oak Island. Three people died and authorities have said up to eight people are injured.

The U.S. Coast Guard detained Edge at the 55th Street boat ramp on Oak Island and Southport police and the SBI questioned him overnight.

A press conference is being held at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St., at 11 a.m. on Sunday regarding the incident. It also can be streamed here.
