NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Madelyn Wampler has been selected to serve as New Hanover County’s sustainability manager, a new position assigned to the county manager’s office, beginning Monday, October 1.

Wampler brings more than 10 years of extensive experience in sustainability, environmental policy, and project management. She joins New Hanover County after serving as the sustainability analyst for development services at the City of Encinitas in California. There she oversaw the development and adoption of a new Green Building and Energy Ordinance and has coordinated multiple coastal flooding adaptation grants and projects with state and federal entities.

“We are thrilled to welcome Madelyn Wampler to our team,” said County Manager Chris Coudriet. “Her depth of experience in environmental policy, coupled with her proven ability to lead and implement sustainability initiatives, makes her an invaluable addition to our county as we continue to advance our resilience and sustainability goals.”

Wampler holds a bachelors degree in Environmental Science from UNC-Chapel Hill and a master’s in biological sciences from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She has contributed to sustainability and resilience efforts across various organizations, including California Sea Grant and the Port of San Diego. During her time with these agencies, she managed multi-million-dollar federal research awards, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and securing substantial funding and entitlements for innovative blue technology projects.

“I am excited and honored to return to North Carolina and contribute to the sustainability and resilience of New Hanover County,” Wampler said. “This area holds a special place in my heart, and I look forward to collaborating with both the team and the community to continue building a resilient and sustainable future for our citizens.”

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners approved the new Sustainability Manager position during the FY24-25 budget process, with supportive advocacy from the Soil and Water Conservation District Board.
