SOUTHPORT — The occupant of a car driven into the water from the Southport waterfront was transported to the hospital last night.

The Southport Police Department was dispatched at approximately 11:25 pm on Tuesday to reports of a car running off the bulkhead into the water. Officers found one vehicle drifting in the river with one occupant yelling for help.

Officers attempted to cast life preservers but could not reach the occupant. Fire and EMS, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, arrived on the scene and were able to successfully rescue the occupant and transport them to the hospital for evaluation.

Only one occupant was reported to have been in the vehicle.

As of Wednesday morning, emergency personnel had located the submerged vehicle and began retrieval efforts.

The accident is under investigation by Southport Police Department.
