
WILMINGTON — Wilmington native Saquan Lyons, 30, pled guilty on Monday in New Hanover County Superior to one count of possession of firearm by a felon and one count of possession of stolen firearm.
Lyons was sentenced to a minimum of 46 months and a maximum of 74 months.
On April 11, 2023, officers from the Wilmington Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Princess Street and N. Fifth Avenue. According to the WPD account, as soon as the vehicle stopped, this defendant exited the front passenger door of the car and fled from officers on foot. While officers were chasing
after him, they observed the defendant grab an object that had previously been concealed in his waistband and throw it into the bushes.
Officers were able to detain the defendant in the 600 block of Chestnut Street. After a search, they found a Springfield 9 mm handgun inside the bushes where the defendant was seen throwing an object. A search of the defendant’s person also yielded a single live round of ammunition that matched the three rounds of ammunition inside the seized firearm.
Lyons is prohibited from possessing firearms due to multiple prior felony convictions. Later, it was determined that this firearm was stolen a few days before from a Wilmington resident.
