Wilmington man faces abuse, firearm charges after public fight

Said Hughes. (WPD)

WILMINGTON — A Wilmington man is charged with several felonies after the Wilmington Police Department responded to a fight he was involved in on Sunday.

Said Hughes, 27, is charged with assault on LEO with firearm; affray; resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer; carrying concealed weapon-gun; disorderly conduct; child abuse; and assault on female.

Around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, WPD units observed an active fight at 23 N. Front Street in Wilmington. According to the WPD, multiple law enforcement officers attempted to break up the altercation when Hughes began to reach for a handgun in his front waistband. Units on scene were able to maintain control of Hughes and disarmed him.

“This is not the first time that a suspect has attempted to use a gun on a law enforcement officer, however, with all of the guns that are being carried illegally, the chances of these interactions occurring are heightened,” WPD Chief Donny Williams said in a press release.

Hughes is currently being held without bond at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
