SURF CITY — Surf City Police responded to shots fired around 5:20 p.m. Sunday.
When officers arrived at 13601 N.C. Highway 50, the Food Lion parking lot, an individual was suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement secured the area, recovered the firearm and determined the incident was isolated.
The Surf City Fire Department and Pender County EMS and Fire provided immediate treatment but the victim did not survive.
The next of kin has been notified and the victim is identified as 38-year-old Cory Eugene Mehringer of Hampstead.
A death investigation is ongoing.
