Located near Southport, the warnings will be tested between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. as part of Duke Energy Progress’ quarterly testing. The 38 sirens will sound for five to 30 seconds to assess functionality; they may be tested more than once.

Local broadcasting stations will not be interrupted via the broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS). However, if there were a legitimate emergency at the plant, local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public.

The Brunswick Nuclear Plant was built in 1975 and is one of 11 nuclear-powered units at six plants in both North and South Carolina helping Duke reach its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
