SURF CITY — A suspect driving a stolen vehicle died after a foot chase with law enforcement.

On Saturday, Surf City Police Department officers identified a stolen vehicle and located it in 2700 N.C. 210. When officers approached the vehicle, a man got out of the car, and officers tried to subdue him.

While attempting to capture him, the suspect assaulted an officer; a foot chase ensued toward an adjacent property. When officers got close to the suspect, he entered farther into the pond and began to struggle.

While officers attempted to rescue the man, he ultimately drowned. The man was identified as 43-year-old Jonathan Charles J’Anthony III of Sneads Ferry; his next of kin have been notified.

The officer injured received medical attention and the Pender County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene to recover the body.

The Surf City PD have consulted District Attorney Ben David, and the State Bureau of Investigation will take the lead investigating the incident.
