
WILMINGTON — The Independence Mall is closed until further notice, following shots fired Saturday afternoon.
The Wilmington Police Department responded to the mall around 2:15 p.m., after being dispatched to an active shooter situation. Deputies from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
The suspect left by the time law enforcement arrived.
According to a press release by WPD, officers learned the shooting took place outside the mall near the food court. Units cleared the building and evacuated shoppers and employees.
An initial investigation revealed it was not an active shooter situation but rather a result of an altercation involving individuals who knew each other that took place outside from the food court; one shot was fired inside.
Officers recovered one shell casing at the scene but has not located a suspect. There are no confirmed victims.
The investigation is ongoing and the mall remains closed through Saturday.
