WILMINGTON — Drivers traveling along the one-way corridors of 16th and 17th streets can expect travel delays due to CSX crews doing railroad crossing repairs.

From Wednesday, June 28, through Friday, June 30, CSX will temporarily close railroad intersections with 16th and 17th streets.

Detours will direct drivers to alternative routes along north-south corridors:

  • Carolina Beach Rd./Burnett Blvd./Third St.
  • Independence Blvd./Covil Ave.
  • Kerr Ave.
  • College Rd.

The railroad track intersects 16th and 17th streets south of the Dawson and Wooster streets, between Marstellar and Wright streets. Repair work is located roughly 1 mile from Novant’s New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Both 16th and 17th are only open one way for traffic, but as one street undergoes construction at the crossing, the other will open for two-way traffic. Authorities will be on hand to facilitate traffic control and detours.

17th Street, normally open one way northbound, will close on Wednesday, June 28, 5 a.m., and reopen Thursday, June 29, 5 a.m. A portion of 16th will open for two-way traffic during this time.

16th Street, which is open to one-way southbound traffic, will shutter on Thursday, June 29, at 5 a.m., to reopen Friday, June 30, 5 a.m. While crews work on the intersection, a portion of 17th Street will open two ways for motorists.

Alternative routes are encouraged to avoid travel delays. Motorists who stick to the 16th and 17th street routes should exercise caution near the work zones.
