NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A group of international consulates will be on hand this weekend and next week to help citizens from Latin American countries gain access to work and live in the county.
A joint partnership between New Hanover County Office of Diversity and Equity and Cape Fear Latinos, the group will expedite requests on passports or visas, as well as address other concerns for citizens from Latin American countries.
They will be at the Department of Health and Human Services facilities off Greenfield Street, beginning on Saturday.
“We are very excited about this partnership which will connect members of our Hispanic community with resources that can sometimes be difficult to find on their own,” Chief Diversity and Equity Officer Linda Thompson said in a release. “Having these consulates visit is so important as they are familiar with the needs of their citizens, and it helps eliminate the language barrier that can sometimes be prohibitive in addressing issues quickly and effectively.”
The El Salvadorian consulate will be available, without appointment necessary, on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon.
The Mexican consulate will be available June 26 through the 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; an appointment is necessary and can be made here or by calling (424) 309-0009
The county is currently in talks to bring in more consulates, such as from Guatemala.
