BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The fastest-growing county in North Carolina has new leadership in the sheriff’s office after John Ingram retired April 30.

The Brunswick County Republican Party suggested Brian Chism take over as sheriff and county commissioners voted unanimously Monday to follow through on the appointment.

Ingram, who has been in law enforcement for 30 years, 15 serving as sheriff, suggested Chism as his predecessor upon announcing his retirement at the end of March.

“He is a grounded man with a strong passion for service,” Ingram said. “He has a commendable career, and if given the opportunity, will serve you faithfully and admirably as Sheriff.”

With his family by his side, Chism took the oath of office Monday, as administered by Resident Superior Court Judge Jason C. Disbrow.

A Brunswick County native and graduate of South Brunswick High School, Chism attended the FBI National Academy. He has been with the BCSO for almost two decades, serving in patrol, special operations, canine, and uniform services divisions.

Two years ago he was promoted to major to oversee investigations, narcotics and the 911 Center before taking on the role as chief deputy in 2022.
