NEW HANOVER COUNTY — As tax season is in full gear, county residents can receive free assistance from professionals.
Beginning Feb. 1, New Hanover County residents can receive free tax preparation and filing assistance by trained IRS-certified volunteers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and AARP Tax Assistance programs.
Available at no cost through April 18, tax prep is offered on a first-come, first-served basis at three locations.
The Senior Resource Center, 2222 S. College Road, will be open Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for in-person tax help. No appointments are needed. Individuals are encouraged to pick up tax packets in advance.
The senior center is also open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for drop-off tax preparation, and appointments are required. To register for a slot, visit the county website or call 910-798-6416.
“Last year, we served more than 3,000 residents through these programs, and we are glad to be able to offer this again,” Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith said in a release.
The New Hanover County Downtown Library also is offering tax assistance Monday through Friday by appointment, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. only, only for in-person help. TO register, call 910-798-7341.
A third location is available at 300 Cape Fear Boulevard in Carolina Beach. In-person tax prep is open Monday through Friday noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
