The Agenda: New boards take oath, employee appreciation bonus discussed in BC schools

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, Dec. 5

Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw. The meeting can be livestreamed online. A few items on the agenda include:

  • Oath of office for newly elected board members Jerry Groves and Wendy Fletcher-Hardee; nominations for chair and vice-chair
  • A resolution approving an interlocal agreement with New Hanover County related to the Scotts Hill Medical Center
  • Process for selection of consultant to assist with healthcare provider negotiations. Read PCD coverage here.

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube.

The Bald Head Island Commercial Area Master Plan Committee will conduct a walking tour of the island at 1 p.m. starting at the Island Hardware store located at 16 Maritime Way. Members of the public may attend the three-hour tour, but will be responsible for their own transportation.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. The board will hear a proposal to modify a plan to build senior housing in Calabash to include amenities contiguous to other senior housing projects after the former public/private housing project in Calabash failed.

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. in the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse at 24 North Third St. The meeting can be viewed live on YouTube. New commissioner LeAnn Pierce will be sworn in at the opening of the meeting along with incumbent Rob Zapple. The board will also elect a new chair and vice-chair, and consider rezoning a 0.36-acre parcel of land from residential to office and industrial.

Tuesday, Dec. 6

The New Hanover County Board of Education will hold the a regular meeting at 5 p.m. in the Board of Education Center at 1802 S. 15th Street in Wilmington. The meetings can be streamed on YouTube. The agenda includes: 

  • Swearing in of new board members and election of chair and vice chair
  • Request to transfer Forest Hills Portico Replacement project savings from program in the amount of $44,500 to the Holly Shelter Paved Play Area project 
  • Memorandum of Understanding with 100 Black Men of Coastal NC 
  • Calendar committee update
  • School improvement plan for low-performing schools 

The Wrightsville Beach Planning Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Wrightsville Beach Town Hall council chambers, 321 Causeway Drive. An agenda was not posted as of press. 

The Pender County Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. at 805 S. Walker St. in Burgaw. The meeting can be livestreamed online. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Surf City Town Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way. The meeting can be livestreamed on YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A resolution to authorize joining HGAC Coop
  • Approval of a grant application for a Beach Management Plan
  • Approval of a site plan for Surf City Dental

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • A presentation on the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Comprehensive Plan findings and recommendations
  • An ordinance appropriating an additional $28,175 for a Riverwalk Extension Feasibility Study, funded by a $10,000 property owner contribution and $18,175 from the council contingency fund. Read PCD coverage here.
  • Resolution to exercise the first contract extension of the Annual Needs Streets Rehabilitation Program with Highland Paving Company, LLC of Fayetteville, NC, and to increase the contract amount by $5 million
  • Resolution to amend the venue management agreement for Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park Between the City of Wilmington and Live Nation Worldwide, Inc.

The Wilmington Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at Rankin Terrace, 415 N. 12th St. The Housing and Economic Opportunities Board of Directors will meet immediately after, followed by the Glover Plaza, Inc. Board of Directors. The agenda includes a resolution to enter into a contract for $177,000 for a physical needs assessment.

The Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. at 1109 Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia. The meeting may be livestreamed. The board will swear in Robin Moffitt and Steve Gainey, as well as elect a new chair and vice-chair. A few other items from the agenda include:

  • Considering a window and door replacement project at Southport Elementary
  • Hearing the board’s annual audit report
  • Approval of an employee appreciation bonus

The City of Wilmington/New Hanover County Joint Subcommittee will meet at 10 a.m. in the Citty of Wilmington’s city attorney’s office at 305 Chestnut St. The subcommittee will discuss funding recommendations for the opioid settlement money. Read PCD coverage here.

Wednesday, Dec. 7

The North Topsail Beach Board of Aldermen will meet at 11 a.m. at town hall, 2008 Loggerhead Court. The meeting can be livestreamed online. A few items on the agenda include:

  • Approval of a subcontract to Otto Connect for parking sign procurement and installation; also to include the option of a one-vehicle annual parking permit
  • Approval of a $0.03 fire tax through an agreement with Onslow County to provide fire protection services
  • A resolution for the town to become part of the American Flood Coalition

The Wilmington Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube. A few items on the agenda include: 

  • Conditional district rezoning from LI, Light Industrial and UMX, Urban Mixed-Use, to UMX(CD), Urban Mixed-Use district (Conditional District) for a mixed-use project at 610, 712, 728 and 732 Surry Street.
  • Conditional district rezoning from O&I, Office and Institutional to MD-17(CD), High-density Multiple-dwelling Residential (Conditional District) for three single-dwelling residential lots at 15 South 29th St.
  • Conditional district rezoning from R-15, Moderate-density single-dwelling district to R-5(CD), Medium-density mixed residential (Conditional District) for a residential development with 24 townhomes at 222 – 246 Victory Gardens Drive and 5815 Tulip Drive.

New Hanover County Airport Authority will meet at 5 p.m. at the ILM Executive Conference Room, 2nd Floor of the Terminal Building, 1740 Airport Blvd. A few items on the agenda include:

  • Construction expansion report
  • Approval of a lobbyist contract for Fetzer Strategic Partners
  • Nonprofit discussion for a scholarship fund

Thursday, Dec. 8

The Topsail Island Shoreline Protection Commission will meet at 2 p.m. at Topsail Beach Town Hall, 820 S. Anderson Blvd. The agenda and a link to livestream the meeting will be available online prior to the meeting.

The Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed on GTV8 and YouTube. The agenda includes multiple renovations to historic buildings.

The Navassa Planning Board is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Navassa Community Center, 338 Main St. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Southport Board of Aldermen will meet at 6 p.m. in the Southport Community Building at 223 E. Bay St. Meetings can be livestreamed here. An agenda was not posted by press.

Friday, Dec. 9

New Hanover Community Endowment will host a meeting at 4:30 p.m. at the Plaza on Princess located at the Harrelson Center downtown. It will announce more than $9 million distributed in its first tranche of grants, to be given out to area nonprofits. The endowment application process was open from Sept. 1 through the 30 for New Hanover County nonprofits to apply. The meeting will be broadcast on Spectrum channel 13 and will be streamed online. Public comment and questions can be made here ahead of the meeting.
