The Agenda: Pender County superintendent hire, board of elections absentee ballots review

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, Oct. 17

The Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at the Hampstead Annex Auditorium, 15060 U.S. Highway 17. The meeting can be livestreamed online; a few items on the agenda include:

  • A $1.1 million request for modular units for Surf City schools for next school year
  • Award of contract and purchase order for healthcare provider services for the jail to Inmate Medical Services. Read more PCD coverage here
  • Discussion about Pender Memorial Hospital and the search for a new provider. Read PCD coverage here.

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed at GTV8 and YouTube.

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in the assembly room at New Hanover County Historic Courthouse, 24 North Third Street, Room 301. The meeting can be livestreamed via YouTube. Some items from the agenda include:

  • Consider resolution to designate some employees to carry out transactions with Truist Bank
  • Novant Health executives will speak about the status of the hospital since its sale

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will hold a regular meeting at 6 p.m. at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. A few items in the agenda include:

  • Request to appropriate $330,000 to purchase an “armored rapid response vehicle” for Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office with American Rescue Plan Act funding 
  • Accept $331,367 grant to create a traffic safety division within the sheriff’s office; read PCD coverage here.  
  • Commit $1.5 million to expand the county utility administration building 

The Pender County Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 2 p.m. at the Katherine Herring Resource Center, 798 U.S. Hwy. 116 S. in Burgaw. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the district’s ongoing superintendent search.

The Leland Town Council will meet at 1 p.m. at Leland Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive, for an agenda meeting. Some items from the agenda include:

  • Dedication of a road
  • Accept certificate of sufficiency pertaining to a petition received from Malmo Ventures, LLC for the proposed voluntary annexation of 896 acres into the Town of Leland 

Tuesday, Oct. 18

The New Hanover County School Board will hold an interim meeting at 5 p.m. at the Board of Education Center at 1805 South 13th Street. The meeting can be livestreamed on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmQG_Yzw_s87Y5LuctCFK9w The agenda includes: 

  • Vessel insurance as related to student field trips 
  • Consider policies on Title IX Sexual Harassment-Prohibited Conduct and Reporting Process Definitions for second reading
  • Clarification of prior written notice of IEP team decisions
  • Teacher assistant staffing

The New Hanover County School Board will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. at the Board of Education Center, 1805 South 13th Street. The purpose of the meeting is to review Robert’s Rules of Order. The meeting can be livestreamed on YouTube. 

Surf City Tourism, Promotions and Special Events Subcommittee will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way.

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed at GTV8 and YouTube. A few items on the agenda include:

  • An ordinance to rezone 8.84 acres at 2916 Market St. and 14 Wayne Drive from office and institutional to a moderate-density, single-family dwelling zoning district to construct 112 apartments and 36 townhomes.
  • An ordinance amending the city code on sidewalk cafes and an ordinance amending the city code on street furniture.
  • Resolution authorizing the conveyance of three surplus properties to the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, Inc. for the public purpose of providing affordable and/or no-cost housing to members of the Wilmington community; read PCD coverage here.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and the Multistate Trust will host a community information session to discuss the Navassa Superfund site at the Navassa Community Center, 338 Main St. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., the groups will hold a community meeting and a drop-in information session will occur afterward from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. More information can be found here.

The New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority executive committee to the board will meet at 3 p.m. virtually. To participate, call (408) 418-9388 and enter access code 2631 618 6152.

The New Hanover County Board of Elections will meet at 5 p.m. in the Longleaf Room at the Board of Elections Office, 1241 A Military Cutoff Rd., to review absentee ballot applications (read more here) and discuss other election-related matters as needed. Pender County Board of Elections will meet at 807 S. Walker St. to review absentee ballot applications and discuss other election-related matters at 6 p.m.

Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet at 30 Government Center Dr. NE to review absentee ballot applications at 4 p.m. as needed. There also will be a regular meeting held. A few items on the agenda include:  

  • Relocating polling place to Frying Pan precinct to Shallotte Volunteer Fire Department
  • Two public comments
  • Director report

Wednesday, Oct. 19

CANCELED
The Pender County Board of Adjustment
scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. at the Pender County Public Assembly Room, 805 S. Walker St., has been canceled. The public hearing scheduled to be held at that meeting will be rescheduled to the Nov. 16 meeting.

The Town of Burgaw Beautification Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St. 

The Wilmington Design Adjustment Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Harrelson Building, 115 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed at GTV8 and YouTube. The agenda includes a request for adjustment from an existing roadway for a proposed residential project at 938, 1121 and 1125 Montclair Drive, and a request for waivers from the city’s technical standards for The Proximity at Watermark on River Road.

The Carolina Beach Town Council Planning Board will meet at 4 p.m. in the town council chambers at 1121 North Lake Park Boulevard. The meeting can be livestreamed here. An agenda was not posted as of press. 

The Bald Head Island Transportation Authority will meet at 9:15 a.m at Indian Trail Meeting Hall, 113 West Moore Street.

Thursday, Oct. 20

The Wilmington Board of Adjustment will meet at 1 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. 3rd St. The meeting can be livestreamed at GTV8 and YouTube. The agenda includes:

  • A variance to the requirements to improve a portion of right-of-way adjacent to a proposed subdivision at 938, 1121 and 1125 Montclair Drive.
  • A variance to exceed the allowable height for a telecommunication tower in the CBD at 4515 Fountain Drive.
  • A variance to building height and setback requirements for an existing business in the CBD at 924 N. 4th St.

The Town of Navassa will hold a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Navassa Community Center, 338 Main St. An agenda was not posted as of press.

The Town of Burgaw Planning and Zoning Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Train Depot, 115 S. Dickerson St.

The Topsail Beach Beach, Inlet, Sound Committee will meet at 2 p.m. at town hall, 820 S. Anderson Blvd.

The Oak Island Planning Board will meet at 10:30 a.m. at 4601 East Oak Island Dr. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Discussion of “Temporary Food Businesses”
  • Proposed text amendment to Articles 1 and 2 the Unified Development Ordinance

The Southport Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. in the Southport Community Building 223 E. Bay Street. The agenda includes: 

  • Update and discussion of Bullfrog Corner Project (101 E. Moore St.)
  • Update and discussion of 115 N. Howe Street

Friday, Oct. 21

The Village of Bald Head Island will have a council meeting at 10 a.m. at the Department of Public Safety Building in the multipurpose room, 273 Edward Teach Extension. The public can access it via Zoom. An agenda was not posted as of press.
