Alleged murderer of Paitin Fields in custody

PENDER COUNTY — The Pender County Sheriff’s Office has secured a warrant to make an arrest in the four-year murder case of a 5-year-old girl.

David Wesley Prevatte, 23, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree statutory rape of Paitin Fields in Pender County on Nov. 13, 2017.

He also faces a statutory sex offense with child by adult. Prevatte was 19 when the crimes were allegedly committed.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana has taken Prevatte into custody, where he is awaiting extradition.

According to WECT, Prevatte is Fields’ uncle. He was named a suspect in June 2018 while in jail for unrelated charges, the news station noted. It was reported that Prevatte denied killing the girl during his sentence and was released in January 2020.

“This has been an ongoing investigation and I am extremely pleased and proud of the effort that has been put into this investigation by my personnel,” Sheriff Alan Cutler said in a statement Friday. “I also would like to express my thanks to Sheriff Craig Webre and his staff in Lafourche Parish for assisting our investigators with taking Prevatte into custody.”
