SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Netflix set up shop across the southeastern coastline last spring to begin filming an adaptation of the 2009 young-adult novel, “Along for the Ride,” by North Carolina author Sarah Dessen.

The streaming giant first announced in May 2019 it optioned three of Dessen’s titles. It started filming “Along for the Ride,” the New York Times bestseller and winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Young Adult Fiction, in town Apr. 26.

Locations included Carolina Beach, Southport and Wilmington. The production wrapped by early summer.

Netflix plans to release the film in early 2022. It subsequently will also release movies based on Dessen’s followup novels, “This Lullaby” and “Once and For All.”
