Checking in with tri-county schools: Districts reporting fewer Covid-cases than past weeks

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — New Hanover County Schools is seeing significantly lower levels of Covid-19 in its buildings, with just 35 confirmed cases and 48 precautionary quarantines the week of Feb. 22-26.

It is the lowest week for cases since November.

Port City Daily obtains data for its weekly updates through NHCS public online reporting. The system shows cases that have been self-reported by students and parents to the schools, which means some unreported positive tests may go unaccounted for.

Additionally, cases disclosed Friday afternoon or through the weekend may reported until the following Friday.

Since Oct. 12, when students returned to in-person instruction, NHCS has reported 751 positive cases total.

Brunswick County Schools

Brunswick County Schools is reporting 22 active Covid-19 cases and 182 precautionary quarantines as of Friday.

According to BCS, its data is collected from the Brunswick County Health Department. Only positive cases that were at BCS locations prior to testing positive are included in the report.

To date, BCS has recorded 372 positive cases among its students and staff. 350 of those recovered.

Pender County Schools

Pender County Schools’ most recent Covid-19 update is from the week of Feb. 15-21. As of then, the school district had 13 known, active Covid-19 cases.

139 people were quarantining after being exposed to the virus.

To date, 471 staff and students in PCS have tested positive. Of those, 458 recovered from the virus.

Port City Daily obtains PCS’ data through its weekly district reporting. The online dashboard updates on Mondays with any positive cases the school is aware of. According to a PCS spokesperson, the district obtains data through self-reporting, as well as the Pender County Health Department.
