Waived federal rules mean all students get free meals in 2020 [Free]

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Regardless of household income, students will receive free school meals through the end of the year.

The offering is due to relaxed rules, waived Monday, that allows the Summer Food Service Program to continue through 2020.

Parents and guardians will not be required to sign consent forms, be accompanied by the student, or have the student’s PowerSchool number available to pick up meals, as previously announced.

New Hanover County Schools is offering grab-and-go meals at 44 pick-up locations. Pick up times vary by location. Meals are free for children 18 and under.

The district is considering an expansion of the program, which could include community delivery or working with area non-profits. More information is expected to be released.
