NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office (NHCSO) First Sgt. and Wilmington Police Department officer rescued two people from drowning Sunday afternoon.
The Maritime Task Force Unit members were patrolling underneath Snow’s Cut Bridge, a popular fishing spot, when they noticed two males in distress, according to a press release sent by WPD.
The males, one 13 years old, were trying to keep their heads above water within a strong current that was pulling them under, according to a WPD release.
Using a throw line, the Maritime Task Force Unit members rescued the two males. The team determined the 13-year-old boy was playing in the water before he was swept under and a man who was fishing nearby jumped in to try to save him but was caught in the current as well.
According to WPD, “there was a language barrier for both males, and the older male left before providing his information.”
In a separate release, NHCSO noted that “[t]oo many times in the past years we mention swimmers in Snows Cut with an unfortunate ending.”
