Wilmington native Charlie Daniels dead at 83

County music legend Charlie Daniels has died.

Best known for the Grammy-winning hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” with the Charlie Daniels Band, Daniels was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Daniels was born in Wilmington in 1936. He grew up in a house off Carolina Beach Road and later worked in a creosote plant nearby.

He played at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in 2014. Daniels died Monday in Tennessee after suffering a stroke.
