WILMINGTON — Authorities have made an arrest in an attempted murder-by-arson incident that occurred early Saturday morning.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), officers responded to reports of a vehicle on fire located on the 2600 block of McClammy Street in the Creekwood neighborhood around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The victim, a 65-year-old male, was asleep in the vehicle in the driveway when the suspect, Warren Clarkson, 62, took a fuel can from behind the residence and began to douse the outside of it with gasoline. He then set fire to the vehicle while the victim was still inside, and fled the scene,” according to WPD.

The victim suffered minor burns but was able to get out of the vehicle.

According to WPD, officers believe this was an isolated incident because Clarkson and the victim knew each other.

Clarkson was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Attempted Murder, Burning Personal Property, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. He is being held under a $505,000 secured bond at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office detention center.

Clarkson has several felony convictions dating back to the mid-1990s, including larceny, possession, and robbery.
