WILMINGTON — During the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, Vice Chair Patricia Kusek was named to the Health and Human Services Board. After an unsuccessful motion by Commissioner Rob Zapple to fill the spot, Kusek was approved in a 3-2 vote to replace Commissioner Woody White, who recently stepped down from the health board.

Kusek’s appointment was originally item 10 out of 11 consent agenda items; these are a block of motions that are usually voted on as a whole without individual discussion or debate. However, commissioners can request that items are moved from the consent agenda to the main part of the meeting — which is what Zapple did.

“I spent five years with the Department of Health, and I believe I can bring a great wealth of history and experience to that as we face difficult times currently,” Zapple said in support of his potential appointment.

Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Jr. nominated Zapple and Zapple seconded it. White nominated Kusek, and Chairwoman Julia Olson-Boseman seconded that motion.

The vote was 3-2, with Barfield and Zapple voting for Zapple, and White, Olson-Boseman, and Kusek voting for Kusek.
