WILMINGTON — Ray Anthony Southers, a felon, was arrested early Thursday morning and charged with the murder of 36-year-old Jody Marie Lopez.
Early Thursday morning, just after midnight, Wilmington police responded to the 1300 block of South 4th Street, four blocks north of Greenfield Lake, in reference to a shooting shortly, according to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD).
“Upon arrival, officers found Lopez suffering from a gunshot wound and performed life-saving measures while waiting for EMS to arrive,” WPD spokesperson Jessica Williams said. “She was transported to NHRMC, where she later succumbed to her injuries.”
The suspect and weapon were quickly located and Southers was taken into custody without incident, according to the WPD.
Southers was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and assault by pointing a gun. He is being held without bond.
According to Williams, Southers’ current address is listed in Wilmington. His prior convictions include common law robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
