NEW HANOVER COUNTY — After a two-month pause, the Partnership Advisory Group (PAG) tasked with recommending future options for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) will host a virtual meeting.

Most of the meeting will be held in closed session. Last month, NHRMC received six proposals in response to the hospital’s solicitation of bids following New Hanover County’s contentious “intent to sell” resolution in September 2019.

Atrium Health, Bon Secours Mercy Health, Duke Health, HCA Healthcare, Novant Health, and UNC Health have all submitted proposals. These proposals will be made available online by Tuesday, April 21 at noon.

A public hearing will be held prior to any final decision on the potential sale or partnership of the hospital.

Barb Biehner, NHRMC Board of Trustee member and co-chair of the PAG, said in a press release the ongoing Covid-19 crisis exposes the hospital’s financial vulnerability.

“We are grateful for everything our physicians, staff, and community, are doing to rise to the occasion and combat this pandemic,” Biehner said in the release. “COVID-19 underscores NHRMC’s financial vulnerability and the need for a robust stable of resources to ensure something like this doesn’t undermine NHRMC’s ability to meet the needs of the region. We must not lose time on positioning New Hanover Regional Medical Center for the future.”

After initially cancelling meetings so that NHRCM team members could prepare for Covid-19, co-chair Spence Broadhurst said in the release the group aims to now make progress toward a decision.

“We know the community, particularly members of the NHRMC team, are very focused on COVID-19 and we don’t want to distract from the important work being done to protect each other and the community,” Spence Broadhurst, co-chair of the Partnership Advisory Group, said. “We also know that we have the proposals and have made a commitment to the community to share them. We don’t want to wait any longer than necessary to make these public and begin the conversation of how we can best secure the future of our region’s health and well-being.”
