BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A cafeteria employee of Brunswick County Schools was suspended without pay, the school system announced in a press release Wednesday.

The employee was investigated in December after the school system received a concern from a parent. Brunswick County Schools Human Resources conducted an internal investigation and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office was notified but did not determine criminal activity had occurred. On Dec. 17, 2019, Lamont Cox was transferred from Virginia Williamson Elementary to Bolivia Elementary School, according to BCS’ personnel list.

This transfer was made to “alleviate any additional concern from the parent,” according to BCS press release.

Brunswick County Schools received a concern from a parent regarding BCS child nutrition employee, Lamont Cox, in December.  The district immediately began an internal investigation through Human Resources and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office began their own investigation into potential criminal activity.  Law enforcement determined that there was no criminal activity.  The employee was transferred to a different location following the end of the investigation to alleviate any additional concern from the parent.

On Monday, February 17th, BCS received an additional complaint from the parent of the child named in the original concern.  Wednesday, February 19th, an additional internal investigation was launched into policy violation and Cox was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

We encourage the community to report any concern involving students and staff immediately so that the district, and law enforcement when necessary, can conduct a throughout investigation.
