Pender County expecting minor flooding this week as rivers crest

PENDER COUNTY — Rivers are on the rise across the state and homeowners and drivers in Pender County should be aware the area is under a flood warning starting Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, flood gauges along rivers have been signaling the potential for flooding over the weekend.

A flood warning has been issued for Pender County starting at 7 p.m. Monday until further notice.

“Along the Northeast Cape Fear River near Burgaw, the river is expected for crest at 10.5 feet by Feb. 12. Gauges at this time on the Northeast Cape Fear River near Burgaw is 9.1 feet and rising. When river levels rise to 8-feet, the lowest portions of River Bend Road west of NC 53 begin flooding as well. Additionally, at 11 feet, these areas plus Old Maple Hill Road are impacted and can become impassable,” according to a statement from Pender County.

The flood warning is currently just for Pender County according to the press release it will take about one week for the high waters to pass through Pender and into New Hanover County. Additionally, rain is expected Tuesday and Thursday, possibly adding to the concern.
