ICYMI – Wrightsville Beach abduction suspects, Cape Fear Memorial replacement, and more

Last year the Wrightsville Beach Police Department began investigating an abduction and sexual assault. After hitting a dead end, the department released police sketches of the suspects as a ‘last resort.’

American Traffic Solutions has repeatedly failed to comply with state laws while operating red-light cameras in Wilmington, Greenville, and other cities. Not only has the company not faced any repercussions from state authorities, but the cities it does business with have apparently little interest in addressing the company’s illegal behavior.

The city of Wilmington spent $20,000 to study a developer’s request for road improvements, even though the city has no plans to fund or build the $16.8 project. In spite of that, it was presented to city council. Why? No one seems know.

The Cape Fear Memorial bridge is running out of time, and is becoming more expensive to maintain than it would be to replace. So, what’s next?

Utilities like CFPUA rely on a pool of water created by Lock and Dam No. 1 to put their ‘straws’ in the water. The problem is the dam, which is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was never designed for that purpose — and now the federal government is walking away from keeping up the infrastructure. Local utilities and state authorities are running out of time to decide what to do next.
