WILMINGTON — Authorities say a man who robbed the Mayfaire Wells Fargo location — and then immediately returned the money — has been committed to a mental health facility but won’t face criminal charges.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), an unnamed 66-year-old man entered the Wells Fargo around noon on Thursday. The suspect did not have a weapon but presented a bank employee with a note demanding money — which the bank gave to the man.

According to WPD, the man promptly went to another teller and returned the money and asked the employee to call the police.

The bank was evacuated and, shortly afterward, the man exited the bank leaving behind a book bag. WPD bomb squad officers inspected the bag and cleared it of being any dangerous items. The man was taken into custody without incident. WPD reported there were no injuries during the incident.

Thursday evening, WPD announced the man would not be facing charges.

“No threats were made in the note, no weapon was used, and the money was returned,” WPD spokesperson Linda Thompson said.

According to Thompson, District Attorney Ben David’s office, along with the FBI, cited the suspect’s mental health problems in their decision not to press charges. Thompson said the man was currently being committed to a mental health facility.
