WILMINGTON — Long-time educator Pete Wildeboer is running for one of three open seats on the New Hanover County Board of Election in 2020.

Wildeboer started teaching in New Hanover County in 1986, and spent over 17 years in the district as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. He then spent four and a half years teaching in Brunswick County and eleven years as principal of North Topsail Elementary before his recent retirement.

“I’ve taught all around the region, so, I’ve seen some really great things in each place that I can pick up and use,” Wildeboer said.

Wildeboer said his three children (two daughters and one son) have all gone through the New Hanover County school system, and his wife was an educator at Williston Middle School.

Wildeboer said his focus would be on student safety, making sure “every school is safe and wonderful, in and out of the classroom.” He said he would also work towards equity and excellence across all of the schools in the district. Wildeboer pointed to recent conversations about redistricting that, in his opinion, would be far less contentious if every school was lifted to the same level.
