WILMINGTON — Wave Transit unveiled a new trolly today at Greenfield Street before taking passengers on its official, inaugural run through five districts in and surrounding downtown Wilmington: North Waterfront, Brooklyn Arts, Central Business, Castle Street, and South Front.
The route begins in the Brooklyn Arts District going north on 4th Street, loops west on Davis Street before turning south and traveling down Front Street for just over a mile.

The trolly will then go east on Castle Street before turning south on 5th Street, west on Greenfield Street, and north on Front Street heading back to downtown Wilmington.
The official announcement of the free route comes after a trial run in September 2018 and an initial test run during the Azalea Festival earlier in April.

The name of the service, which never stopped its service since last fall, is Port City Trolley, following a public naming contest that ended last May.
Two new trolleys that were delivered in the last two weeks each use compressed natural gas, compared to the diesel used by the now-retired trolley.
In June 2018, Wave Transit concluded a five-year plan, part of which included a study of the Downtown Trolley Program. The plan called for an expanded route beyond the Central Business District to surrounding districts.
“Increased coverage and connectivity between the five downtown districts — Central Business District, North Waterfront, Brooklyn Arts, Castle Street and South Front — was a priority as expressed by the public and the Downtown Trolley Focus Group through our planning effort,” according to Wave Transit’s website. “The pilot route received most favorably was launched on October 15, 2018 as the permanent Downtown Trolley route.”
The route will run seven days a week:
- Monday – Friday: 7:10 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. (every 40 minutes)
- Saturday: 10:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. (every 40 minutes)
- Sunday: 10:30 a.m. – 5:50 p.m. (every 40 minutes)
