BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Brunswick Community College expanded their existing partnership this week.
Brunswick Community College’s President Gene Smith, and University at North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) Chancellor Jose Sartarelli, signed a letter of intent regarding a Bilateral Articulation Agreement Monday.

The agreement expands the two educator’s existing partnership that provides a pathway to university enrollment. In September 2017, both UNCW and Brunswick Community College (BCC) established a health and fitness exercise science program partnership was first established, according to BCC spokesperson London Schmidt.
An existing Comprehensive Articulation Agreement provides a pipeline for students in Health and Fitness Science, Early Childhood Education, Biotechnology, and Aquaculture.
“This recent agreement adds another layer as it ensures acceptance at UNCW for those students meeting the criteria,” Lois Smith, BCC’s Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, said.
This week’s agreement provides enrollment at UNCW for Brunswick Community College (BCC) students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Engineering with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
With a 3.0 overall GPA, BCC students can transfer into UNCW at junior-level status, according to a BCC press release Thursday. Earning a 2.5 or higher guarantees the student admission into UNCW, according to Smith.
According to Schmidt, the agreement took effect immediately. This means current BCC may begin coordinating with UNCW Transfer Admissions now, to learn if they meet the program’s requirements.
“This agreement is a great opportunity for our students wishing to further their education at a four-year institution to have a seamless transition, making it even easier to achieve their educational goals,” Smith said in BCC’s release.
