WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department (WPD) has identified the victim of last night’s fatal shooting in the Creekwood South neighborhood.

Police identified Zalleux Johnson, 18, as the man shot and killed on the 700 block of Emory Street. After responding to a ShotSpotter notification shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday, police found Johnson with a gunshot wound. EMS transferred Johnson to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The victim appears to be a validated gang member. As reported by WECT in early 2018, a teenager named Zalleux Johnson was arrested along with another teen for a 2017 armed robbery. The robbery took place on the 3000 block of Pauline drive, less than a half-mile from Thursday’s shooting.

WPD confirmed at the time Johnson was a validated gang member. Johnson was sentenced to a maximum of two years for felony robbery and was released after six months in November.

WPD confirmed that Thursday’s victim, also named Zalleux Johnson, shared the same birthday — January 12, 2001 — and age — 18 — as the teenage gang member reported on by WECT.

Police said they were still investigating the shooting.
