Hundreds of new apartments proposed for Wrightsboro area off Castle Hayne Road

A development of 360 new apartments is being planned for the Wrightsboro area, but a conditional use permit will have to be issued by the county before any construction takes place.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — As the City of Wilmington reaches its capacity for new developments and housing, more and more developers are turning to the unincorporated county for new projects. Once-spartan regions like Wrightsboro and the northern parts of New Hanover County are now becoming more populated and attractive for both developers and potential residents.

One such project is being proposed off Castle Hayne Road called the Wrightsboro Commons which would consist of 360 apartments — 15 buildings each with 24 units.

A community meeting is being held on Thursday for all property owners within 500 feet of the proposed project’s boundaries.

Wrightsboro Commons will require a conditional use permit in order to construct the high-density residential development.

“A meeting will be held on Thursday, November 29th, at La Bella Airosa restaurant meeting room, 3500 North Kerr Avenue, 6:00 p.m. If you cannot attend, you are also welcome to contact me at telephone 910-620-2374, or email cwolf@lobodemar.biz with comments and/or questions,” Cindee Wolf of design solutions, the company representing the development said in the community meeting notice.

The county will not even consider an application before a community meeting is held, Wolf said, so it will likely not make it to the county for approval until next year. Additionally, a traffic impact analysis will be required before approval can be given, she said.

The development would be located in close proximity to several retail locations as well as restaurants including Food Lion, Walgreens, and McDonalds.
