SOUTHEAST N.C. — Hurricane Florence made landfall a week ago and the region is still suffering, and recovering from the storm, but one of the questions on the minds of school-aged children across the region is, “When will school start back?”
School systems will also post updates on social media pages including Facebook and Twitter.
Port City Daily will update this article as more announcements are made by the school systems in the region.
Brunswick County
In Brunswick County, the answer is not for at least another week.
According to a statement from Brunswick County Schools, “All Brunswick County Schools will be closed for students next week from Monday, 9/24/18 through Friday, 9/28/18. Staff is asked to check their email for schedules regarding next week or contact their supervisor for more information on when they report to work due to it depending on their position.”
Pender County
“Due to large-scale school building storm damage, continued flooding and staff displacement, Pender County Schools will be closed for students next week – Sept. 24th-28th. School Administrators and custodial staff should report to their schools Monday, Sept. 24th. Wednesday, Sept. 26th-28th, will be optional workdays for teachers,” according to a Pender County Facebook post.
New Hanover County
“New Hanover County Schools announced today that schools will remain closed for students during the week of September 24-28. At this time, the district is still conducting damage assessments, cleaning up and making repairs in the schools and other district facilities in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. NHCS is working to reopen schools as soon as possible so that our students can return safely,” according to a press release.
Employees that are able to safely return should do so in accordance with the schedule below:

All 12-Month NHCS employees, all Assistant Principals, and all custodians will return on Monday, Sep. 24, 2018.

All other 10-month salaried employees will have optional, undesignated work days Wednesday, Sept.26 – Friday, Sept. 28, 2018.

Hourly Child Nutrition workers should also return on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018.

All other hourly employees (including bus drivers, after-school workers, and tutors) should return to work on the first student day which will be announced at a later time.
