WILMINGTON — A Wilmington woman has been convicted of robbing a man and pawning several items she stole from him in December of last year after tricking him into believing she could return a computer stolen from him previously.
“On the morning of December 31, 2017, Dekoya Danisha Evans, age 33, went to a
home on Long Leaf Drive and convinced the resident to give her money because she told him she could return a computer that was previously stolen from him. Evans took the victim’s money and left the home. Evans returned two hours later with an unknown male suspect. The male suspect came up from behind the victim and choked him, holding the victim down as Evans proceeded to ransack the victim’s room and steal multiple items including three knives belonging to the victim,” according to District Attorney Ben David.
After an investigation the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office found that Evans had pawned two of the knives and sold the third, police have not yet been successful in determining who the man who helped Evans in the robbery was.
“A New Hanover County jury found Evans guilty of Common Law Robbery and three counts of Obtain Property by False Pretenses. Superior Court Judge Tanya Wallace sentenced Evans to a 19-32 month prison sentence followed by a 9-20 month prison sentence. Judge Wallace also sentenced Evans to a 9-20 month suspended sentence and supervised probation when she gets out of prison. Evans was ordered to pay restitution to Jim’s Pawn in the amount of $135,” David said in a press release.
This is not the first time Evans has been charged with robbery and she has a history of breaking into vehicles, simple assault, and drug convictions.
