BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Mt. Misery Road will open later than expected in Brunswick County.
As North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) crews work to update the widening road, summer rains have delayed anticipated plans to complete roadwork by the end of summer.

With a reopening date initially set for Sept. 16, NCDOT will likely continue work in the area through mid-October.
“The rough estimate now is we need another month to finish the project,” Andrew Barksdale, spokesperson for NCDOT, wrote in an email.
Crews have been working since June 13 to replace two metal drainage pipes with a concrete culvert. At the time of construction, the pipes were not long enough to accommodate the road’s new width.
When the region was hit with heavy rainfall – in some areas, fourteen consecutive days – it slowed the department’s ability to continue work. “The rain directly affected structure and roadway operations and prohibited some operations completely,” Alex Stewart, a NCDOT deputy district engineer, said.
In the meantime, the department is in the process of determining a new opening date, Barksdale said.
