Wilmington Police searching for driver after downtown hit-and-run leaves one badly injured

The victim was driving his moped last week when he was struck from behind at a downtown Wilmington intersection

WILMINGTON—The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a downtown hit and run accident that left one man in the hospital in need of reconstructive surgery.

The victim, a 41-year-old Wilmington man, was struck while driving a moped in downtown Wilmington around 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23. The suspect in the hit and run, driving a black Chevrolet Cruze, fled the scene.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the victim was driving to work, traveling north on Third Street. The suspect vehicle turned from Market Street onto Third and drove behind the victim for two blocks.

As the victim slowed for traffic at the intersection of Third and Chesnut streets, the Chevrolet Cruze struck the victim from behind, throwing him off the moped. The suspect then fled, still in the Cruze, in an unknown direction.

The victim was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he required reconstructive surgery.

The Wilmington Police Department are asking anyone with information about the hit and run or the suspect driver to call 910-765-0861 or use Text A Tip
