TOPSAIL—Two students from Topsail High School were found with weapons on campus Tuesday morning. While both have been arrested by the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, their reasons for having the weapons differ.
According to Pender County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Captain James Rowell, the Sheriff’s Department received a phone call at 8:30 a.m. regarding a student on the way to school with a firearm.
The sheriff’s office then initiated a lockdown. Deputies located the suspect student in a car on campus. He was found in possession of knives, but no firearms, Rowell said.
A second student was then found on campus with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle, Rowell said.
According to Rowell, the student with the firearm heard that the school was on lockdown and brought the gun with him to stop the potential school shooter.
Both students were arrested and charged, he said. The lockdown status of all schools have been lifted and no injuries were reported.
