Plan ahead: Wrightsville Beach Marathon will cause significant delays Saturday

The marathon will cause significant delays starting early Saturday morning and lasting through noon.

WILMINGTON – The Wrightsville Beach Marathon will cause serious traffic delays between UNCW and Wrightsville Beach this weekend.

The event takes place on Saturday, March 17. The Wrightsville Beach Marathon features a full 26.2-mile marathon along with several other races.

The event starts at 6:40 a.m. at Wrightsville Beach. The course will occupy parts of Military Cutoff Road, Eastwood Road, Oleander Drive and Wrightsville Avenue. Delays will last until at least noon.

Event organizers provided the following list of traffic issues, ranked from most to least serious.

  • Military Cutoff and Destiny – expect significant delays between 7:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
  • Eastwood and Rogersville – expect significant delays between 7:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.
  • Oleander and Airlie/Wrightsville Ave – Expect significant delays between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.
  • Salisbury Street on Wrightsville Beach – Closed from 6:40 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
  • Airlie Road (eastbound, sound side) – you will not be able to travel from Oleander to Eastwood using Airlie – only from Eastwood to Oleander (west)
  • One lane of Eastwood and Military Cutoff will be shut down in both directions leading into the intersection.
  • Rose Ave/Mallard and Rill to Clear Run will be slower traffic
  • Autumn Hall residents should be mindful of marathoners between miles 20-23 in your neighborhood through noon
