Two weeks of lane closures on I-140 Wilmington bypass begins Monday

The John Jay Burney Jr. Freeway will remain open to traffic, but the NCDOT recommends drivers plan ahead and drive with caution.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY – The North Carolina Department of Transportation is warning Wilmington-area drivers that there will be lane closures on I-140 for the next two weeks.

The lane closures will begin on Monday, March 5. NCDOT crews will be inspecting and performing maintenance work on the bridge over Blue Clay Road and the CSX railroad in northern New Hanover County.

The work will affect the traffic in both directions on the newly completed I-I40 Wilmington bypass, between the I-40 and Castle Hayne Road interchanges.

Only one lane at a time will be closed, and traffic will remain open I-140, also known as the John Jay Burney Jr. Freeway. However, the NCDOT is advising drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time, and drive carefully through the work zone.

Bridge work is scheduled to be completed by Friday, March 16
