Wilmington man arrested after evading police, striking pedestrian and driving into pond

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department arrested a man Sunday morning for allegedly attempting to evade police caused him to hit a pedestrian and drive into a pond.

According to police spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron, around 2:20 a.m. an officer observed Robert Bickford, 31, of Wilmington, speeding on Market Street.

Bickford drove into a parking lot and tried to exit by making a left-hand turn onto Market Street, jumping the median to get into the westbound lanes.

Despite the officer’s activated lights, Bickford continued driving and attempted to turn right onto Dapple Court. Bickford then hit the curb, struck a pedestrian and drove into the retention pond in front of Staybridge Suites of Wilmington.

Bickford exited the vehicle and tried to run from police. He was apprehended shortly after.

The struck pedestrian suffered a broken leg and was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Bickford did not sustain any injuries.

Bickford is charged with aggravated felony speeding to elude arrest, felony hit and run, felony serious injury by vehicle while driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated and failure to maintain lanes.
