CAROLINA BEACH — A fire in Carolina Beach Monday morning claimed the life of one resident before fire departments were able to intervene.

The victim was trapped upon dispatch, according to Carolina Beach Fire Chief Alan Griffin.

The fatality and damage to 18 units at Inland Harbor Condominiums resulted from a fire that started around 8:50 a.m.

Griffin said in a press conference that the victim’s identity, as well as whether a dog’s life was also claimed in the fire, is confidential information.

“It was too late to save the victim,” Griffin said.

Several local fire departments were on the scene, including assets from Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Wilmington and New Hanover County Fire Departments at 500 St. Joseph St. Monday morning.

Of the damaged units, three incurred total damage.

Griffin said that the American Red Cross was on the scene, connecting displaced residents with a temporary place to live.

Although no foul play is suspected, Griffin said an investigation was underway, through local agencies as well as the State Bureau of Investigation.

“We’re not suspecting anything suspicious,” Griffin said.
