WILMINGTON — Sunday night marks New Year’s Eve, and while many Wilmington residents and visitors will be welcoming the new year with champagne, the Wilmington Police Department will be out in full force.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy their New Year’s celebrations, but we want them to do it safely, which is why we have a specific holiday plan in place,” police spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron said.

Lieutenant Kelly Sipe, who is overseeing the downtown New Year’s Eve plans for the WPD, said the department is doubling its presence downtown with additional officers. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department will also be providing Wilmington with five extra deputies to help with Sunday’s activities.

And for those who choose to celebrate by hitting their favorite bar downtown, WPD will have an officer every block in the central bar district Sipe said.

The WPD will also have the prisoner transport vehicle downtown in the event that it is needed.

“We will have officers arriving early enough to make sure citizens enjoy dinner before the bar patrons arrive. The second group, New Years Revelers, typically arrive around 10 p.m.,” Sipe said.
