Clawfoot tubs, vintage woods and movie props: Legacy Architectural Salvage’s Holiday Market is Saturday

WILMINGTON — Need an excuse to get out of the house Saturday? At Legacy Architectural Salvage, the older, the better.

Legacy Architectural Salvage is hosting its Holiday Market this Saturday on Dawson Street. From 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., visitors can look through some of historical Wilmington’s treasures, saved by the organization.

Sixteen artistic vendors, a food truck and Red Eye Bakery are all set to help visitors in their holiday shopping between checking out ways to recycle vintage household items in the salvage shop.

A project of the Historic Wilmington Foundation, the salvage shop is filled with vintage items salvaged from historic homes.

“We go to deconstructions of homes that they’re getting ready to tear down,” said Deborah Helms, assistant manager of Legacy Architectural Salvage. “If we don’t go in there and salvage, all that stuff is going to the landfill.

“A lot of times with historic homes they’re renovating, they’ll donate the flooring to us, the siding to us,” Helms said.

The warehouse is stacked full of salvaged items donated from historic homes.

A freight elevator, hundreds of doors, windows, lighting, hardware, vintage woods, movie props, clawfoot tubs, standing sinks, columns, mantels and more can all be found among the warehouse’s many forgotten treasures.

Located at 1831 Dawson Street in Wilmington, behind Stevens Hardware, the warehouse is regularly open the public Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

As for the Holiday Market, the organization is hoping to get young people interested in the art of architectural salvage.

“It’s going to be very fun and very festive, we’re really excited about it,” Helms said.
