BOLIVIA — The Brunswick County Board of elections has announced a recount for several election races throughout the county, including Boiling Spring Lakes commissioner, Southport mayor, Sunset Beach councilman, and Brunswick Regional H2GO commissioner.

Director of Elections Sara Knotts said that, according to state statute, recounts are permitted under certain circumstances. A candidate is able to demand a mandatory recount if the difference of votes counted is less than 1 percent between the prevailing candidate and the losing candidate. In the Town of Sunset Beach, a Town Council candidate requested the recount.

For the other three elections that will receive a recount the Board of Elections made the decision to recount since the numbers were within or very close to the 1 percent range, Knotts said.

Typically, recounts are announced after canvassing of the total votes are completed, but Knotts said, by preemptively recounting, the process will be expedited, especially with the upcoming holidays.

The recount will take place on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Board of Elections Office in Bolivia and is open to the public.
