LELAND — The Town of Leland could grow an additional 37 acres Thursday evening if the Town Council approves the annexation of a parcel of land located in the Lanvale Forest Subdivision. A public hearing is being held at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
The land in question is currently undeveloped and located off Old Forest Drive in the subdivision, totaling 37.85 acres. The Town of Leland’s Planning Board voted 6-0 unanimously to request the council approve the annexation.
According to the request for action, which was submitted by Gary Vidmar, economic and community development director, “… The governing board of any municipality may annex by ordinance any area contiguous to its boundaries upon presentation to the governing board of a petition signed by the owners of all the real property located within such area.”
If the annexation is approved, the property would become a part of the town and subject to all municipal ordinances as well as taxes. The annexed property would also be entitled to all municipal services such as police and fire services.
“The proposed annexation would support the goal of increasing the types of housing in
the community,” according to the request.
The property in question is currently zoned in Brunswick County R-6000 high density residential for single family homes, according to the documents, and has a total of 46 lots to be located in the annexed area.
If approved, the newly acquired property would be zoned as R-6 residential district zoning, a nearly identical zoning classification to the county’s.
Financially, the annexation would increase the tax base with the additional 46 homesites ad valorem property tax as well as sales tax revenue, according to the plan summary.
