BRUNSWICK COUNTY — County officials have recently learned of a scam occurring in other areas of the state and are warning Brunswick County residents they may soon be targeted.

According to a press release from the county, a scammer posing as “Aqua Water Solution” out of Raleigh has contacted water customers.

The scammer is offering to take a water sample from household taps using the Ziploc bag. The scammer will then return claiming to show the presence of Dioxane and GenX; the scammer then tries to sell a $7,000 to $8,000 water filtration system.

Earlier this year, it was revealed a chemical known as GenX was being discharged into the Cape Fear River, tainting drinking water for customers across the southeastern portion of the state.

Research is ongoing into the reliability of filtration systems to remove GenX and similar toxins from the water, but a definite solution has yet to be identified.
